Abstract

This study examines the symbolic meaning and user perception as key factors sustaining the architectural identity of Muhammadiyah educational buildings, focusing on SMA Muhammadiyah 2 Sidoarjo. Using a qualitative interpretive method, it applies Charles Sanders Peirce’s semiotic triad—icon, index, and symbol—combined with hermeneutic interpretation from field observation and perception surveys. Findings show that spatial configuration, symmetrical geometry, and color symbolism (blue–yellow) reflect the principles of faith, rationality, and tajdīd (renewal), with the mosque as the central ideological orientation. Users perceive strong identity, pride, and emotional attachment to these symbolic elements. The study concludes that Muhammadiyah architecture functions as an ideological medium translating spiritual values into spatial order, proposing an Ideological Architecture Model integrating form, meaning, and user experience
